All sections of text in an XML-compliant document must be tagged (that is, marked up to define what the text is – a heading 1, body text, a footnote etc).
You might think that this will make the writing process even more difficult. But think of it another way – no longer will you have to spend time painstakingly formatting a document, you can simply tag it with the click of a mouse. In fact, studies show that by removing the formatting requirements, authors can dramatically improve their productivity because they can focus solely on the writing.
What's more, today's XML tools are very user-friendly, utilising many of the functions you know from Microsoft Word and other such programs. This makes XML usable for even the most non-computer-literate author.
