Reports on productivity by business management specialists frequently show that workers spend more time looking for information than using and acting upon it.

Sophia is unique in that it uses the related disciplines of Semiotics and Intertextuality to increase the findability of information – as opposed to other approaches that rely on mathematics or pattern matching. Semiotics empowers Sophia to understand and interpret the meaning and context of information within documents. Intertextuality explains how the meaning and relevancy of a document as a whole depends on all the other documents within the organization.

Unlike standard search solutions which are one-dimensional or ‘flat’, Sophia’s ability to search by meaning delivers a deeper and richer search experience that provides users with invaluable information that otherwise may have gone undiscovered.

Sophia does not rely on taxonomies, ontologies or dictionaries; nor does it require any training. This provides significant cost savings to customers.

Semiotics

The power of Sophia lies in its conceptual design difference. Sophia is fundamentally different to other search technologies as it is based on a recognised linguistic model called Semiotics.

Semiotics is the scientific study of signs and text, and includes how meaning is constructed and understood. Related to this model is the concept of Intertextuality which dictates that, in order to fully understand the real meaning of a text within a corpora or organization, it must be read and understood within the context of all other similar documents.

The same document will have different relevance and meanings for the same query in two different corpora because its context is different in both.

The benefits of deploying this model are that Sophia can truly understand context, return more relevant information to users as a result of their search, and ensure the correct meaning of returned information is understood by the user.
